Episode 49: Fiona Mozley on her gritty new novel, “Hot Stew”
UK writer Fiona Mozley explores the evils of gentrification in her gritty new novel, Hot Stew, set in the heart of London’s Soho, where a property developer is trying to drive a group of women sex workers from their homes and workplace. Mozley, who names Dickens as an influence, has created a large cast of unforgettable characters, from the good-hearted Precious, who leads the women in their fight, to Agatha, the beautiful but evil Russian property developer. An exposé of the “broken system” of home ownership in London as well as a moving tribute to the strength and solidarity of female sex workers, who are too often portrayed as victims, Hot Stew is a thought-provoking, highly entertaining read.
