Episode 44: Stan Grant talks about his brilliant new book, “With the Falling of the Dusk”
Stan Grant’s brilliant new book, With the Falling of the Dusk, draws on his decades of experience as a foreign affairs correspondent reporting from the world’s hotspots as well as his deep knowledge of global politics and philosophy to warn us of the threat to democracy and the rise of tyranny in a post-COVID world.
Whilst we have all willingly traded freedom for security as a short-term response to COVID, Stan reminds us of the need for vigilance – once you have surrendered certain freedoms, it is difficult to get them back.
He writes about the rise of China and its brand of authoritarian capitalism, and how that threatens the Western concept of liberal democracy. He describes the rise of Al-Qaeda and ISIS, visiting training camps and speaking to trainees as well as leaders.
Always mindful of his own personal history of dispossession as an Indigenous person in Australia he bears witness to the lives of the oppressed, drawing hope from the courage and resilience of individuals.
At a time of great global upheaval, Stan provides a snapshot of where we are now, speaking with authority, wisdom and deep compassion.
