Episode 43: Leah Kaminsky and Meg Keneally discuss their beautiful new anthology, “Animals Make us Human”, a true passion project

This week Nicole spoke with Leah Kaminsky and Meg Keneally about their new anthology, Animals Make us Human, which they put together as a response to the devastating bushfires in the summer of 2019-2020. Wanting to do something – anything – Leah and Meg asked contributors to “write a love letter to an animal or an environment” and the result is this glorious celebration of Australian wildlife – from land, sea and sky.

Contributors include top writers such as Bruce Pascoe, Geraldine Brooks, Tom Keneally and Ceridwen Dovey as well as wildlife experts. Everyone worked on the project  pro bono and all sale proceeds go to two not-for-profits – Australian Marine Conservation Society and Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

Leah and Meg’s aim was consciousness-raising – to make readers think about the threat posed by climate change to our native species by engaging their emotions.

Expect to be moved by this episode – and learn how Leah got herself an ASIO file by sponsoring a wild duck!
