Richard Fidler, much-loved host of ABC Radio’s Conversations, first visited Prague in 1990, just after the Velvet Revolution which saw bohemian playwright Vaclav Havel elected as President after the collapse of Communism. The city left its mark on Fidler, who returned nearly 30 years later to research and write his brilliant new book The Golden Maze, a biography of the city of Prague. Here he discusses three fascinating moments in Prague’s history – the Nazi invasion, the Prague Spring followed immediately by the Soviet invasion and the Velvet Revolution of 1989.
